Carinal resection, a complex and aggressive procedure for the treatment of these tumors, may be a safe approach for highly selected patients, in experienced centers with acceptable morbidity and mortality and good long-term survival.

Prof. John Dark is Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Freeman Hospital in the UK. He was president of the ISHLT from 2010 to 2011. He performed Europe's first double lung transplant.
